Compostos de corticeira-do-mato (Erythrina falcata Bentham) para modulação da memória do medo condicionado

>Descrição

This new technology involves the production of a flavonoid composition derived from the tree Erythrina falcata. The data indicate that the composition acts on the serotonergic, glutamatergic and GABAergic system, and can be used as a cognitive enhancer. They also suggest its use for the prevention of memory decline that occurs naturally with aging, or in the treatment of cognitive decline observed in dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and other types of memory impairment.

>Problem

Thanks to the promising effects that have been reported, numerous studies currently focus on the action of flavonoids on memory. The main reported effects on cognition are linked to the consumption of food supplements, plants or flavonoid-rich extracts. One of the causes of the beneficial effects of flavonoids is that they participate in cellular differentiation and in the modulation of cellular mechanisms involved in memory formation, such as long-term potentiation (LTP).  Various plant extracts have well known benefits, but no study so far has reported on the benefits of the extract of Erythrina falcata, also known as the Brazilian Coral Tree. This new technology consists of a flavonoid composition of this plant and its beneficial effects on memory.

>Benefits

The administration of the composition in healthy young rats improved their learning and memory retention for up to 72 hours, indicating its promising therapeutic potential for the treatment of cognitive deficits in early stages of dementia.
